I was a block away from the bus depot and saw this poor guy across the street. I felt really sorry for him. About him. Then I thought about it. Shit! He's my idol!

I did a double take here. The man is a ringer for a guy in the practice. For a second I thought, "Jesus, where'd he get the cash to go out west? Oh...riiiight, the OxyContin."

Permission to retire, SIR!

This guy had a different life before he had this one. I just wonder. I called 911 once when walking to work through a different neighborhood because I couldn't see where the guy was breathing as he was propped up in a doorway. Ever see the paramedics 'wake up' someone in a drug/alcohol induced stupor? Sobering in and of itself. I asked my son, who is a licensed EMT and works for FDNY, have ya ever had to do that? thump 'em hard and yell in their face? His reply: Let's get dessert. I bet the dessert here is really good.

That is really a great shot! They're the best kind of photos.

When I was in my first 5 years at the paper, working nights, I pulled into the parking lot in front of my house after my shift one evening. I saw shoes sticking out from under one of the bushes. With further inspection, I noticed there were feet inside the shoes. I called 911. Later, the police called me to tell me that the guy who owned the feet was totally stoned and went to sleep under the bushes. They carted him off from in front of my house. Ahhh, living in the city. That was the life.

julie, thank you for telling me that! I thought this was such a great opportunity for a photo and it appears that my sense of humor is not universal. :) BTW, if that were me, i would have screamed bloody murder...
