Got a lovely Thanksgiving card from Biz. Handmade, too. Bizzie says Thanksgiving is her very favorite of holidays; come to think of it, this is the one national holiday that most Americans observe, despite their ethnicity or faith tradition.

I like Thanksgiving, too. It's a stubborn holiday--Wall Street nor Madison Avenue has never been able to wrest control of it as they have Christmas. After 400 years, it remains about food, family and friends. Football, too. As a point of reference please note that the Detroit Lions hosted the first Thanksgiving football game; in 1934, the Chicago Bears accepted the invitation to play in the Motor City and gave thanks by beating the Lions 19-16.

We will have our traditional small, quiet Thanksgiving here at Bellemaison. We'll get in some nice walks with the Chows and see as many movies as we possibly can. In the meantime, the menu has firmed up, although absent one green vegetable.

Thanksgiving 2006
Bellemaison

Joanna's Hot Rolls with butter
Maple Syrup/Honey Brined Oven Roasted Turkey
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Sage and Celery Dressing
Sweet Potato Stuffed Apples
Cranberry Chutney

Salted Caramel Ice Cream
Apple Pie
Pumpkin Something OrOther

Angie Marani will be here and she tells me we are having 3 Cheese Pumpkin Enchiladas on Wednesday night with an apple and gouda tart laced with tawney caramel sauce. I say bring on the food, family, friends and fun. I've got some thanks to be giving.

Our Thanksgiving will be spent with family. Ugh. Not looking forward to it. Too much dysfunction, but at least the turkey and fixins are delicious.

Phil, hence our small, quiet observance. I'll be thinking of you! :)

angie, angie, angie. You Italian always ellude me somehow. I am sorry about butchering your name. Really.

Yeah, Southwark Lad, what'll it be that day? The Tate? The Albert and Victoria? The City of London? Aw, you don't wanna go back to that damned British Museum again; that thing is boring after about 3 dozen times. yeah. jealous. right.

Vendella: that's the second time I have heard that. It actually was sauted spinach that was proposed by the Sous Chef here at Bellemaison. I am known for my vegetables, a skill developed at my mother's knee, and my spinach is quite tasty. Are you going to cook?

scottsdale: boy. This is a miss. We could be eating together. And playing dominoes. And arguing over which movie. I'm gonna say at least someone at your place would pick...Harry Potter? Which Angie Mariani would fly into an instant delirium about. sigh. hey.

maybe next year??

I'm with Phil, jealous of your simple Thanksgiving celebration! We'll have two turkeys this year, one away and one at home. Cranberry Chutney sounds like a good step up from the canned sauce. Happy Thanksgiving!

How about a green vegetable dressed simply with a fresh herb or two as it runs through the seasoned oil sprinkler of love?

Uh-Oh...

HAH! HAH!
Thanks, I needed that. :)

For the first time in decades I am not, I am happy to say, cooking! I have successfully persuaded my family members to do something *completely* different this year--outside their box o comfort--we're going to one of the coolest taverns (circa late 1700's, early 1800's) to dine on glorious food prepared by others and served by others (in colonial dress of the non-cutesy-let's-be-theatrical kind).
I am so excited!!!!

Now, if only I had a pe...
oops, wrong blog.

gLib: I KNOW! I thought the same thing.

HHTPT: That's wonderful. When our kids were on visitation when they were little, we did that. It was fun! It was NICE. It was different and we have great memories of those times together, early in our marriage. We will have one kid home, The Good Kid, who never leaves her mother high and dry. We intend to spoil her rotten. It will be hard, though, because she has been the apple of everyone's eye for many years and she is sooooo spoiled now. We love her that way. You know, as I was typing, I realized she's the best looking of the group and the smartest, too. Of course, the most athletic, best at board games. She is the perfect child. Perfect.

Bree! My buddies at Orangette swear by this and persuaded me to queue up; Angie Mariani approved the final selection so we're in this together, she and me. I'll let you know! I'll post the recipe tomorrow.
