March. What's the deal with March?

My first memory was that it was my mother's birthday and all her girlfriends celebrated with luncheons and cards and little gifts. Only now does it seem odd that my father didn't gather us all together and create a celebration/commemoration of my mother on her birthday. And come to think of it, I always felt left out of that day and wondered why.

My next memory of March is seeing the grade school bulletin boards, "In like a lion..."; that never connected to any extent with me.

My next memory is of Julius Caesar and high school Latin and English. Beware, the Ides of March. THAT connected with me with all contacts solidly adhering. Treachery, betrayal, secrets. March.

My next memory is of those Irish Catholics partying their hearts out. Curious. Always have felt really disconnected from that celebration but made sure my little Irish kids had lots of shamrocks shakes and green frosted cookies. Do you know the American Bishops issued a special dispensation last year so Catholics could eat corned beef on Friday, a meat day? Seriously curious.

My next and now memory is March Madness. Just lately, one of my alma maters routinely packs up the band and the cheerleaders and takes them with the team to run with the big dogs in March. Hopeful. Hopeful; drama. Disappointment. And after that's over, Lent is in its final excruciating mile, spring arrives with a wobble, and the daffodils shiver bravely in Bellemaison.

H'lo JBelle. Cool drift of thoughts.

I never understood that "In like a lion bit either," and, sad to say, Julius is still one that I have not read of Wild Bill's pieces.

Those Irish Catholics were everywhere in my neighborhood (photos of Kennedy next to the pope in every other house)...so I wore orange as a kid. heh-heh.

Cheerleaders are a total bafflement, and I gave up Lent for Lent - quite a few years back - so I don't worry about that one anymore.

March is also Spring Break (as I am a teacher & student for life). And the sound of 10,000 idiots with guns approaching 10,000 other idiots with guns. And also the March Hare. March of Dimes. Marching to a different drummer. And spring cleaning and leaky cabins...

March on!

Greetings.

I have stumbled over here a couple times but failed to comment.

But reading your "in like a lion" statement...I just had to. This has been on my mind for awhile.

In gradeschool like every freaking year we had to do some kind of art project with lions and lambs during the month of March. It got real old.

And don't even get me started on creating turkeys by tracing our hands for Thanksgiving.

The horrors and monotony of gradeschool art.

March forth!

I was just thinking of that "in like a lion" bit the other day. I can't say that it did at all this year. I wonder if it ever does.

Good afternoon Jbelle.
A splendid post as always. I'll just throw some Tennyson into the fine March mix you have going here. These lines make me think he should have laid off the caffeine a little ;)

'All in the wild March-morning I heard the angels call;
It was when the moon was setting, and the dark was over all;
The trees began to whisper, and the wind began to roll;
And in the wild March-morning I heard them call my soul.

Alfred Tennyson, The May Queen

I've always known March to be the "March of Death." In high school, March was the one month out of the entire school year that we didn't have some sort of holiday or break to split the month up. Everyone was quite restless and couldn't wait to get away for Spring Break and Easter that was awaiting in April.
Now it's the month that teases you with promises of Spring. Some days hold 60 degree weather while sometimes it can drop looww into the 30s!
